Next Series

As we announced last Sunday, we will be following the Revised Common Lectionary over the next year.  Each week, The Lectionary assigns for study/reflection/teaching one passage from the O.T., one Psalm, one passage from The Gospels, and one passage from the Epistles/the remainder of the N.T. Please take time to read the verses for each week which will be listed at the bottom of each newsletter. If you would like to learn more about The Lectionary, simply Google the phrase Revised Common Lectionary.

Twister- Update From Sarah

Last week we had our first Tuesday night Twister. It was also our back to school night and we were able to hand out the backpacks provided by the Two Rivers family. I had the opportunity to spend some time talking with the grandmother of two of the kids before Twister started and she was so grateful we were providing backpacks. Her grandkids go to Moulton (a school that goes year round) and she explained that they had all been praying that Twister would be giving away backpacks again this year because the buying of new backpacks kept getting pushed back each week to things like water bills and food. Thank you for the support and love that you show the kids at Bates park through things like the back to school packs.

My favorite part about this week was a middle school boy named Marco and he is also my prayer request for the week. We met Marco this year and this kid just amazes me. The stories he tells me regarding his home life makes my heart break and yet he is one of the few Twister kids to have an incredible serving heart. He does so much for his little sisters and spends the entire time at Twister trying to help us in any way he can, whether it be by carrying stuff to and from our car or helping out with a game. Please pray for Marco this week; that he will feel loved, stay safe and come to know Jesus.

Verses For The Week

Deuteronomy 30:15-20

30:15 See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity.

30:16 If you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the LORD your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess.

30:17 But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them,

30:18 I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

30:19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live,

30:20 loving the LORD your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the LORD swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

Psalm 1

1:1 Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;

1:2 but their delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law they meditate day and night.

1:3 They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.

1:4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

1:5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

1:6 for the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Philemon 1-21

1:1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our dear friend and co-worker,

1:2 to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house:

1:3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1:4 When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God

1:5 because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus.

1:6 I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ.

1:7 I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother.

1:8 For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do your duty,

1:9 yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love–and I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus.

1:10 I am appealing to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become during my imprisonment.

1:11 Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and to me.

1:12 I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you.

1:13 I wanted to keep him with me, so that he might be of service to me in your place during my imprisonment for the gospel;

1:14 but I preferred to do nothing without your consent, in order that your good deed might be voluntary and not something forced.

1:15 Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back forever,

1:16 no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a beloved brother–especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.

1:17 So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you would welcome me.

1:18 If he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account.

1:19 I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay it. I say nothing about your owing me even your own self.

1:20 Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you in the Lord! Refresh my heart in Christ.

1:21 Confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.

Luke 14:25-33

14:25 Now large crowds were traveling with him; and he turned and said to them,

14:26 “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple.

14:27 Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

14:28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it?

14:29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him,

14:30 saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’

14:31 Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand?

14:32 If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace.

14:33 So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.

Nursery Leader – Catherine has done an amazing job leading the Nursery over the past several years and we have been blessed to have her in this role. Recently, she made the difficult decision to step down as she finishes up her teaching degree at UNI and as Eliza begins kindergarten. Here is the job description for anyone who might be interested in filling this vital role. Please email Rob if you are interested in taking over these duites.

*You must be an owner at Two Rivers to be the Nursery Leader.

*During the week responsibilities for the Nursery Leader are as follows;

There is a quarterly schedule that is made for the nursery. Initially, about two weeks out from the schedule being made, an email is sen to all volunteers asking them which Sunday’s they will need off. You will collect this data and put it on the spreadsheet so you have the information when you go to make the schedule. You would then make the schedule up and send it out to the group of volunteers. Every Wednesday before they are scheduled to serve, you will need to send out a reminder to the volunteers who need to be there. Some prefer to have it texted to them instead of e-mailled.

The JR Volunteers schedule is made up on a monthly basis. As of now, Rob sends out their reminders with the other nursery reminder. This may change now that a larger group will be joining. Perhap you could do this quarterly with the other schedule. Also, remember to not schedule children on weeks they have small group.

Twister Update

Thank you to everyone who took a card or backpack to be filled for Twister. We still have several that can be picked up this coming Sunday. As I’m sure you noticed the “Back to School” list does not contain school supply items but rather items like toothpaste, soap, socks, etc. The schools our kids attend will make certain every child has their school supplies, however, personal hygiene items are sometimes overlooked by these families. The first day of school is an exciting time and I know every child wants to show up looking and feeling their best. Please return your backpacks by August 15th and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks again for your help with this, the neighborhood always appreciates and needs these back to school packs. -Sarah

Twister Update
We had another week of low attendance at Twister, but it was a great afternoon of talking about what it means to be a child of God. While it can be discouraging when only a few kids show up, some of the best conversations have happened on those smaller weeks.
Also on Sunday night, Tanaiya, one of our Twister kids and one of the girls who is living with me accepted Jesus as her Savior. It was a very exciting night at our house. It is refreshing to see such a young faith and all the questions and excitement that comes with it. We started Twister six years ago because we wanted kids to know Jesus, moments like Sunday night is why we do this. So, thank you for your faithful prayers and please continue to pray for the salvation of our Twister Kids and the Bates Park community.

Twister Update

From Sarah -
I feel like it’s been awhile since I’ve given a Twister update so I wanted to fill you in on the past month at Twister. We have had a couple of weeks of very low attendance at Twister and if you remember earlier in the Twister season we were having weeks of the highest attendance we’ve ever had. As leaders we have been discussing why this is happening and what we need to do to get the word out there about Twister. While our weeks at Twister are still going great with fewer kids, it’s frustrating to work in the neighborhood and see so many more kids who just aren’t showing up.
Any fears about the kids just not wanting to come were laid to rest during our VBS week last week. We had about 100 kids come at some point during the week and I met several new kids. The week went phenomenally and I can’t thank all the volunteers enough. I think anytime you imagine one hundred kids in a park attempting to do structured activities you might imagine some chaos. But the whole week was very calm and very enjoyable and I know it’s because we had so many amazing volunteers.
I had to opportunity to take a step back from leading the activities and just watch kids learn about Jesus all week. It was very amazing and I was able to have great conversations with both parents and kids. Each night I went to pick up anywhere between 5-15 kids and I loved walking them into their house and watching them show their parents their crafts and tell them all about their night. On the last night five of the kids even sang the songs they learned to all the people sitting outside at their apartment.
Overall it was a wonderful week, I can’t say that enough. Thank you for your prayers and support that make it possible for us to do things like Kids in the Park.

Moulton Back to School Health Fair – This Wednesday

E-mail Michelle at mlghanson@gmail.com if you can help.

Two Rivers is invited to be a part of Moulton’s Health Fair again this summer. The date is July 14th from 4-6 pm. Our role will be to set up a children’s clothing drive (probably on the evening of the 13th) in the basement of the church across from Moulton. We will also be responsible for staffing the clothing drive on the 14th from 3:45-6:00–or a little later for clean up. Times will be subject to change a bit as the organization for the even is still under way.

We will need about 10 individuals to help set up and about 5 to help staff it and clean up. We will need to start collecting clothes for infant through young adult. “In style” adult clothing of all sizes will work for some of these 8th graders. Coats, jackets and boots will also be accepted. Also, Moulton will be going to uniforms this school year, so we will have a table of khakis (pants, longer skirts, capris and longer shorts). Please send a note to all of your friends about collecting clothes for the event.

Thanks! Michelle and Dawn

Girls Night Out – from Andrea Cooley – This Thursday

I would like to invite the women of Two Rivers over to our house (4317 Allison Ave) Thurs July 15 at 7 pm for an evening of fellowship. We might have a little project to work on, but mostly we just want time to get to know everyone and be girls! My email is andrea.m.cooley@gmail.com and cell: 515.333.1535 if you have questions.

Hope Ministries – This Saturday

For those of you who weren’t there this Sunday, or who were there but wanted more information on this – we have the opportunity to volunteer this Saturday, July 17th from 9:00-3:00 at Hope Ministries. Hope is one of the largest homeless organizations in Iowa, operating Bethel Mission (a men’s shelter), the Hope Café (a soup kitchen that serves 3 meals every day of the year), a thrift store over on the east side, and a number of other ministries focusing on homelessness and poverty.
Every Saturday they have church groups of 10-20 who spend the day volunteering at a few of Hope’s outreaches. I had the opportunity to do this with another church group last year and it was a phenomenal experience. Here’s what the day looks like: In the morning, we’ll help sort donations at the bargain center. We’ll then eat lunch at the Hope Café and tour Bethel Mission, and at around 1:00 we’ll actually go down to the homeless camps by the river and help pass out supplies and pray for the people down there. (We’ll be led by a guy from Hope who has been doing this every Saturday for 8 years, so he knows most of the people and does most of the talking.)
I apologize for the late notice on this. We were going to try to do this sometime in August or September, but when I called to schedule, they said they were booked all the way through January. Then they called me back a few days later to tell me that one of the church groups had cancelled for this Saturday and we could have their slot if we wanted to. So we decided to give it a shot! If we aren’t able to go this Saturday we may not have a chance until next spring sometime.
Please email me at kvandekrol@gmail.com if you’re interested in going or if you just want some more information on it. We have six so far, and the goal is that we’d have at least 12, but we can have up to 20. We may end up having to cancel if we don’t have enough people. Let me know by Thursday if you can make it.
Also – this isn’t restricted to just people at Two Rivers. If you know someone who would like to come that doesn’t go to our church, feel free to invite them to come along!
Thanks,
Kevin

Coats, jackets and boots will also be accepted. Also, Moulton will be going to uniforms this school year, so we will have a table of khakis (pants, longer skirts, capris and longer shorts). Please send a note to all of your friends about collecting clothes for the event.

Thanks! Michelle and Dawn

Girls Night Out – from Andrea Cooley
I would like to invite the women of Two Rivers over to our house (4317 Allison Ave) Thursday July 15 at 7 pm for an evening of fellowship. We might have a little project to work on, but mostly we just want time to get to know everyone and be girls! My email is andrea.m.cooley@gmail.com and cell: 515.333.1535 if you have questions.

Moulton Back to School Health Fair

Two Rivers is invited to be a part of Moulton’s Health Fair again this summer. The date is July 14th from 4-6 pm. Our role will be to set up a children’s clothing drive (probably on the evening of the 13th) in the basement of the church across from Moulton.  We will also be responsible for staffing the clothing drive on the 14th from 3:45-6:00–or a little later for clean up.  Times will be subject to change a bit as the organization for the even is still under way.
