Twister Update

From Sarah -
I feel like it’s been awhile since I’ve given a Twister update so I wanted to fill you in on the past month at Twister. We have had a couple of weeks of very low attendance at Twister and if you remember earlier in the Twister season we were having weeks of the highest attendance we’ve ever had. As leaders we have been discussing why this is happening and what we need to do to get the word out there about Twister. While our weeks at Twister are still going great with fewer kids, it’s frustrating to work in the neighborhood and see so many more kids who just aren’t showing up.
Any fears about the kids just not wanting to come were laid to rest during our VBS week last week. We had about 100 kids come at some point during the week and I met several new kids. The week went phenomenally and I can’t thank all the volunteers enough. I think anytime you imagine one hundred kids in a park attempting to do structured activities you might imagine some chaos. But the whole week was very calm and very enjoyable and I know it’s because we had so many amazing volunteers.
I had to opportunity to take a step back from leading the activities and just watch kids learn about Jesus all week. It was very amazing and I was able to have great conversations with both parents and kids. Each night I went to pick up anywhere between 5-15 kids and I loved walking them into their house and watching them show their parents their crafts and tell them all about their night. On the last night five of the kids even sang the songs they learned to all the people sitting outside at their apartment.
Overall it was a wonderful week, I can’t say that enough. Thank you for your prayers and support that make it possible for us to do things like Kids in the Park.

Moulton Back to School Health Fair – This Wednesday

E-mail Michelle at mlghanson@gmail.com if you can help.

Two Rivers is invited to be a part of Moulton’s Health Fair again this summer. The date is July 14th from 4-6 pm. Our role will be to set up a children’s clothing drive (probably on the evening of the 13th) in the basement of the church across from Moulton. We will also be responsible for staffing the clothing drive on the 14th from 3:45-6:00–or a little later for clean up. Times will be subject to change a bit as the organization for the even is still under way.

We will need about 10 individuals to help set up and about 5 to help staff it and clean up. We will need to start collecting clothes for infant through young adult. “In style” adult clothing of all sizes will work for some of these 8th graders. Coats, jackets and boots will also be accepted. Also, Moulton will be going to uniforms this school year, so we will have a table of khakis (pants, longer skirts, capris and longer shorts). Please send a note to all of your friends about collecting clothes for the event.

Thanks! Michelle and Dawn

Girls Night Out – from Andrea Cooley – This Thursday

I would like to invite the women of Two Rivers over to our house (4317 Allison Ave) Thurs July 15 at 7 pm for an evening of fellowship. We might have a little project to work on, but mostly we just want time to get to know everyone and be girls! My email is andrea.m.cooley@gmail.com and cell: 515.333.1535 if you have questions.

Hope Ministries – This Saturday

For those of you who weren’t there this Sunday, or who were there but wanted more information on this – we have the opportunity to volunteer this Saturday, July 17th from 9:00-3:00 at Hope Ministries. Hope is one of the largest homeless organizations in Iowa, operating Bethel Mission (a men’s shelter), the Hope Café (a soup kitchen that serves 3 meals every day of the year), a thrift store over on the east side, and a number of other ministries focusing on homelessness and poverty.
Every Saturday they have church groups of 10-20 who spend the day volunteering at a few of Hope’s outreaches. I had the opportunity to do this with another church group last year and it was a phenomenal experience. Here’s what the day looks like: In the morning, we’ll help sort donations at the bargain center. We’ll then eat lunch at the Hope Café and tour Bethel Mission, and at around 1:00 we’ll actually go down to the homeless camps by the river and help pass out supplies and pray for the people down there. (We’ll be led by a guy from Hope who has been doing this every Saturday for 8 years, so he knows most of the people and does most of the talking.)
I apologize for the late notice on this. We were going to try to do this sometime in August or September, but when I called to schedule, they said they were booked all the way through January. Then they called me back a few days later to tell me that one of the church groups had cancelled for this Saturday and we could have their slot if we wanted to. So we decided to give it a shot! If we aren’t able to go this Saturday we may not have a chance until next spring sometime.
Please email me at kvandekrol@gmail.com if you’re interested in going or if you just want some more information on it. We have six so far, and the goal is that we’d have at least 12, but we can have up to 20. We may end up having to cancel if we don’t have enough people. Let me know by Thursday if you can make it.
Also – this isn’t restricted to just people at Two Rivers. If you know someone who would like to come that doesn’t go to our church, feel free to invite them to come along!
Thanks,
Kevin
